I would think that the areas adjacent to the anomaly should also show some kind of doubling if it were a DDR.

I am not saying that it is a ddr or isn't...however... I do disagree with you statement... and here is why....look at the 2009 FY finger ddr's....a very small area doubled...my understanding is .. the hub(which has the design on it) is pushed into the die...which before this process is a cone shaped steel rod... the class VIII double die happens on the single squeeze presses by the hub and die not being exactly in alignment... one part of the die touches the hub.. then they snap into the correct alignment and the design is pressed into the die... if the original touch is at a spot where the correct alignment would have a blank area or a very near blank area (IE.. the field.. in between the bays...the most shallow part of the neck) the first touch will leave a design image behind...giving you... extra fingers, ears, thick or wide Y in liberty, lines from the columns by Lincoln sitting, etc with no other areas showing doubling ....I found a ddr on a New Mexico quarter...just a small hook and a line.. but it dose happen with this newer single squeeze class of doubled dies
please fill me in if I got something wrong or if someone disagrees with my explanation so I may learn...
