Received this coin in the mail today as part of a trade. To me it looks like a split upper serif. What do you think?

A little secret about the 1911 D rpm series...its more about die cracks and other markers than seeing the actually RPM. Got any OBV or REV pics of this cent???

Are you suggesting that all 1911-D RPMs have die cracks? I am suggesting that this is an unlisted RPM. There are very few listed.Attached Files"If Free Speech stops when someone gets offended, it is not really Free Speech."Comment

There are 4 different RPMs for 1911-D.
As Bob stated, each has it's unique markers. Bob has studied and taken the time to learn the markers for each variety (some of the markers are indeed die cracks on the reverse as he noted).Chris & Charity Welch- LIVEANDIEVARIETIES

There are four "known" RPMs for 1911-D, just like there were 18 "known" for 1963-D, until I found #19 & #20. My question is not if this is one of the four listed. I am quite confident it is not. I am wanting to know if it looks as if it could be a "new, unlisted" RPM."If Free Speech stops when someone gets offended, it is not really Free Speech."Comment

I couldn't call it based on these photos. I agree it looks possible, and need better inspection. And I agree that while there are four known 1911 D RPMs, there could be more out there.-Sean

Sean, This one is to far gone from wear and die stage. I wouldn't waist the $$ on it because of the two things stated earlier in this post. This coin, "even if it were an RPM" would not get listed. Just my opinion...Comment

No money wasted. I picked it up in trade, not as an RPM, but just as a 1911-D cent. It was something that just caught my eye when I examined it after it arrived in the mail. It was worth a shot."If Free Speech stops when someone gets offended, it is not really Free Speech."Comment

With exception Of RPM #1, yes, they all have a die crack(s) Some Obv, some Rev some both sides including the questionable D/S variety.
I do not think your coin is of high enough grade to determine if its a new RPM. Thus I was asking if you have any die cracks to guide you to it being a known variety.
