I found this one in a Whitman book of uncirculated wheat pennies dating 1941-1958. It grades (IMHO) at or above MS68 and is a beautiful red masterpiece of 1942-S 1DO-002. I see evidence of a minor DDR on this beauty, but 1DO-002 does not have a DDR associated with it. What a pleasant surprise it was to find this rare penny, and, in all places, a Whitman book! This is by far, the best coin I have found to date.
Very nice DDO, this one is under-rated for how neat it is.
It's a DDO that shows on almost everything.
I don't know why but this die shows up in unc more than I'd expect by chance. I'd assume it means it came out at the start or end of the year when people put away some rolls.
That's a very nice coin, not MS68 but a very nice coin that should probably be slabbed to keep it that way.
Yes, I think you're right about it not being MS68. There seem to be a quite a few carbon spots and streaks in the field above LIBERTY, coming from what appears to be the coin getting rubbed on the obverse by the vinyl sliders on the Whitman folder. Here are more close up photos showing nice detail on Trust of the motto and two shots showing the obverse and reverse of the coin and the nice clear fields above the date and on the entire reverse. I can see only a couple very small post mint dings.
Great find! Well done. I'm not an expert in MS grading, but wouldn't that fingerprint above LIBERTY knock it down a bit? Probably from when it was pressed into the book.

That's a fun one. We used to always look for it when we searched common date bags. Echoing what Ed said, I've actually cherried this one in uncirculated grades more times than circ. Fun die, and seems to be at least as scarce as DDO #1
