the toning seems to be on opposite sides left obverse right reverse is it rust it has the same cresent shape on both sides
Can anyone explain the copper toning?

It might even bve from heat. I tried a buynch of different thing just to see what happens to some of my copper cents. I found that if you stick one in the oven for a while that it gets a very nice odd color along with some redness that makes it look like it was almost painted at one time. Now when Im searching, I run into a few cents now and then that have that same red bleeding thru the copper and kinda know already that its just some damage from heat.
Im not sure about yours because I only have each MM of 43 in BU and Im not touching them for any kind of testing..lolol.
But it does look like it may have been heated ...Im not positive tho. Just a guess!!!
I was wondering how long it was going to take before BJ put a trail avatar on his name..lolol
