    1972-S Double Die

    Hello

    I'm new to coin collecting.

I discovered a 1972-S penny in a bag of old change which very much appears to be a double die.

The doubling is most apparent on the Date, Mint Mark, and Liberty obverse.

I can find information on the 1972-Philadelphia Double Die but nothing on the S variety.

Can someone give me any feedback on the 1972-S double die and its value, rarity, etc...

The penny still retains much of its mint luster and is in average condition overall I would say. thx.

Welcome to the forum. We will need a photo in order to give you any definitive information. But I can tell you this, if the mint mark is doubled in the same way as other parts of the obverse, then I can almost guarantee you that your coin is suffering from machine doubling. I can say this because the mint mark was added to the die AFTER the die was hubbed, so it wouldn't also be showing doubling like the other devices on a doubled die. This is not worth any premium. Also, 1972 had 2 master dies used. 1 of these master dies has doubling on it, which translates to over half of ALL 1972 cents made from every mint also exhibit this doubling. If this is what you have it is also common and not worth any premium. Look at these links please:

        Thx for the info.
I will get the images and post.
Is there a trick to getting a good close up image to post here. My phone camera just doesn't focus in clearly that close up.
