Here is one that is driving me crazy! I had posted the same before but was unable to capture what I see. Mainly America has notches on every letter and I not seeing any thing on the rest of the coin. A can be seen on a lot of years with a notch.
What would your thought's be. Thanks
Wexler gives a good over view of the master hub, master die and working hub doubling http://doubleddie.com/58222.html toward bottom of page... I see the notches your are pointing out but I do not know if they are the master hub doubling or not... May need to send this one for an in hand look???
Jim (A.K.A. Elmer Fudd) Be verwy verwy quiet... I'm hunting coins!!! Good Hunting!!!
This looks like MD to me. I don't see anything that seems hub related.. Even if it were, it would be so minor as to not be collectible or maybe even visible on some circ coins.

Hey cranky, I have been where you are. Once I sent some coins to Ken Potter , one was a very minor ddo quarter. He said to me much the same as Bob just said except he added " How in the world did you even see that ! "
This kinda reminds me of the 1965 doubled die reverse, the only difference is that the 65 is stronger and you can see the doubling without that much magnification, one thing I would look at more then anything is the designer initials , there should be some spread on the fg as well . Even if this a doubled die and as others have stated, it would be to minor to list. I always keep a good rule of thumb, if you have to really magnify a coin to see the doubling, it is to minor to list.
I think that most of the notches on America and that's the only place I can see them is caused by 2 things.
Die deterioration and Ejection damage. The Die is worn causing slight play and getting kicked out of the press.
As far as seeing this I have several devices from hand Loupe's to Digital Scope's. The AmScope will get me in trouble with the magnification level and use it last.
When I mentioned that I have seen the same type of doubling on this 1966 as other years tonight on a 1971 I found yet another. Don't think any of the reverse die's changed until later in 1971 when the stairs were strengthen. So I'll post the Reverse of the 71 that has similar notches.
I don't even think this is doubling of any kind. I think it is just the normal way the design is. You just can only see it on some specimens in the right lighting.

Thanks Will. I'm going to the hardware store for some new lights. Never thought that all the new Energy and so called efficient illumines and watts could effect my vision and wow does it. Even the bulb's at radio shack for the Am Scopes have changed at least manufacture specs.
