jfines, you've helped me so often I thought I'd offer my two cents' worth [literally -- attached]... I'm new at all this and wasn't finding RPMs very effectively (and was even worse at attributing) until I started looking at them using the monochrome setting on my scope. At least for attribution, I find that it nicely smooths out the distracting colors and can often intensify and highlight the serifs and notches. In doing this, I didn't have to mess with brightness, contrast, and gamma settings, etc.
And when really in doubt, I tilt up the western edge by placing a nickel under it -- then shoot. The difference can be pretty dramatic at times. I've attached sample color and monochrome versions of the same RPM and same lighting. The monochrome setup was tilted.
