Is Abe Growing a Mullet?

Here is an example of a 1958D Lincoln cent. It looks like Abe is growing a mullet.

Is this the result of a die scratch/gouge?

I've come across this die before. One of those die gouges that were common in '58.

That's a nice gouge I don't think I've seen before. There are many other dies from 58-D with deep gouges that are hard to miss!
