    1966 FS-801 DDR-001 in MS62BN

    CONECA lists this as DDR-001/1-R-I-CW

    Wexler lists this as WDDR-001
Die varieties such as doubled dies, Repunched mint marks (RPMs), Over Mint Marks (OMMs), Repunched Dates, Overdates, coin design varieties, as well as regular coins and error coins.

The Cherrypickers' Guide has the coin as FS-801.

I was able to trade for this coin a few weeks ago with some cherrypicks I made from ebay. I'd been hoping to have an example of this variety for some time and I'm glad to have this one off the list. It definitely is a bit of a difficult one to come across.

The coin is a nice chocolate brown MS62BN in an unlabeled PCGS holder. I hope to eventually send it to PCGS and get the holder labeled, but I plan to wait for some time to do so. Some members here might have seen this coin on ebay before as the seller tried for some time to sell it, before trading it to me.

    Dan

Dan, good luck on the re-submission. I hope it works out for you. I know a lot of work went into obtaining this example. It is an impressive specimen. Best wishes.

Dan, what a awesome die that is....What a trade to get that coin, I would have done the same thing...It is a very scarce die for sure, and I am sure one day with all the cents I look at one will land in my hands....And if one does, I will fall off my computer chair....LOL!!!!...Great addition to your collection..

I know I am no grader but I do have a question on your coins grade... I see numerous dings on both the obv and rev... There also appears to be circ wear on both sides... The color is really nice tho... Why does your coin grade a MS62??? If you think my question is out of line for this thread just let me know and I shall delete it... No problem by me... That is why I put it in a separate reply!!!

It shouldn't matter when grading but it may have depended on who originally submitted the coin for attribution and the volume they submit or possibly because there are so few of them the graders gave it some "grading license" (similar to 'artistic license" or leeway?)

Some people say AU58-63BN are the hardest grades to predict.

Thanks for the input... I have read about grading but I still can not wrap my mind around it

Questioning the wisdom of PCGS is one of my favorite hobbies. Personally I would call the coin AU58BN but that isn't where the standards are today unfortunately. This coin really wouldn't make any difference between AU58 and MS62 anyways. It's the variety that makes this coin, not the number.

Indeed. I think of the available/affordable varieties it has to be near the top. The 1982 DDR and 1988 doubled earlobe would be up there as well for me, but of course those would be unavailable! Probably 1970-S DDO-001 should be pretty high as well. A beautiful MS63RB NGC sold on Heritage Auctions for $1880 recently (https://coins.ha.com/itm/lincoln-cen...kedLots-101116). That's pretty dang affordable for that variety!

Not a pick of mine but it did take quite a few of my own cherries to get this one!

Excellent coin and on my impossible list as well. I did take one off that list recently so hope springs eternal !
