1968 S DDO or clash of some sort?

I found nothing in the Varieties on this. It almost looks like an inverted 9 underneath the existing 9. Any thoughts?

    Thanks, Jon.

Those appear to be die cracks. To be another 9 would be near impossible.

Thank you Bob! It would appear to be a wide raised area though. I'll try to get some better pics.

Wouldn't die cracks continue through the devices?

        (And wouldn't an inverted 9 be a 6?)

I need to let this one soak for a day. There is a lot more junk on the coin than I realized and may be what I'm seeing too. And yes I suppose that the 6 would be a more logical choice, I was a little slow on the uptake there.

After you get some of the gunk off try to get a slightly wider area around the date and MM... Also if you do not mind I would like to down load your new date/MM pics and try an over lay??? Unless of course the anomaly disappears It does not look like cracks to me but you never know... Bob is usually correct about this stuff!!!

Jim, any pics I ever put up on LCF are yours to do with as you want. You don't ever need to ask me again on any but I do appreciate you doing so. I'll probably pull the coin out and rinse real good and drop it back in until this evening and see where we are. As you said, "faster than me", it may not be. After rolling around the different sites, it is very apparent that Bob is the MAN and would always take his word to the bank. As he does not have the coin in hand, (which there is much to be said for), he is dependent on my pics to make assessments and they are somewhat lacking at this point. I'll put some back up once I get through the crud though.

                Thanks, Jon.

Cool... Thanks for the follow up... Bob knows his stuff... As with any image, unless you are one of a few folks here, it can be difficult at times to get a good assessment of a coin except in hand!!!

Just realized this evening that this coin was still soaking. Once again I was trying to see things that were not there. After getting gunk out of the way, we can now see that there is nothing there at all...
Once again, thank you all for your patience! Jon.

This is a great example of how normal everyday circulation can affect our perceptions of a coin.

Thanks Vivien. A good lesson though. I have noticed on many I search a white looking gunk is common. I am assuming this is clothes detergent as often as I see it. Thoughts?
