Does your smart fone have a usb cable??? If so you should be able to connect directly to your computer and transfer/copy the pics directly to your confuser???

Yep, it has a USB cable but only charges the phone when plugged in.

I wonder if I have to open the camera app, view images and then click "share" to get them to the PC.
I'll have to try that.

I had a Moto phone, I tried to get images with the USB and never found a way. The only way was emailing them to myself like you did.

Some phones will show up like a drive but some will not.

You can also transfer files thru blue tooth... If your fone is android based then it should transfer with no problems to a windows based confuser... You may need to adjust a feature or 2 in order to turn on the transfer feature on the fone and/or your confuser!!!

Most likely under blue tooth settings on the confuser and fone... On your confuser you may also need to go into Network settings and make your confuser discoverable??? It has been a while since I have transferred files via blue tooth... I use the USB cable these days!!!
