I took high resolution images of the various stages of the 1955-S RPM#2, and decided that 4 stages represent the overall progression of stages very well: Stage B, E, I, and stage L. Here is the progression in animated form:

Thanks! After staring at this animation for a while, I decided I didn't like it going in reverse. The progression only goes forward. So I created a new version that moves a bit faster but with more transition images and a "reset" at the end. Let me know if this version makes more sense from a perspective of documenting the stage progression:
I also thought this aniumation showed the progression of the mintmark repunching becoming stronger with die wear. Especially the upper curve...as it starts out it is pretty rounded and has less than obvious separation, but by the later die states the separation is more obvious.
Cool... I see what you are refering to... It is a more logical appearance then taking it in reverse order also... it will be less confusing to any new collectors... I really like how much it reinforces the changes that occur due to die wear!!!

That is freakin' awesome Ray! I had a vision once of a coin time lapsed through its life from BU to circ. This animation is probably the closest to it I will see! Would be neat to see, but near impossible unless different coins were used with different amounts of wear. This animation you have put together could really narrow down which stage you have. Excelent work as always!
I think it is outstanding work. Very well done, and a very important point that you made... that sometimes, repunchings will get stronger with die wear.
