1983 D Dime DDO? Double Strike? Plating?

Im not much one for dimes but found this in my pocket change and wanted to know what caused this. I posted it on another coin forum but got minimal response (thats why Im taking my business here now ).

Anyway to me it looks like his profile has been double maybe triple stamped but isnt flat like I'm used to seeing on double strikes.

So I figured maybe you cent experts might have an opinion as to what caused this. Have at it boys (and girls)!

    Thanks in advance!

Wow, that's fun! I'm not qualified to give a complete answer on this type of variety, but looks like an extreme form of die erosion/deterioration on the obverse.

I wonder if it was struck through a very late stage capped die? I don't think die wear on die striking clad coinage gets this bad...

I don't know what it is, but my first impression was extreme die deterioration. The stuck through very late die cap seems like a possibility also, but this is one that I just don't know about.

That is downright spooky! It is also a very nice find and great pictures. I hope it turns out to be a really rare variety or error.

Thanks for all the replies, I thought at first it might be die deterioration but I havent seen any coin with it that bad, then I thought maybe a double strike but its not the flat edges Im used to seeing, and thats when I gave up and posted it here.

I had to google "stuck through very late die cap" (which actually took me too a lincoln cent resource page). Definately sounds like that could be a cause, the definition i read certainly sounds like it could cause this. Although the image on the dime does not seem to affected in anyway like the lincoln cent that was pictured with the definition.

Thanks again for the friendly replies and teaching me something new.

It looksl like severe die deterioration to me. The effects can be quite varied.

Die deterioration it is then. At least now I know how far it can go. Thanks folks!

I agree with Mike, severe die deterioration is the cause for this anomaly.

Just wanted to thank Jason for taking his time to look at this and sharing his excellent pictures with me. The verdict was it is most likley struck through (a very late stage) die cap.

                        Thanks again Jason!
