Great News! (well for me and my coin habit)

After 2+ years of fighting the Veterans Affairs for compensation (from my ailments due to my time in service in Afghanistan) I receieved a phone call today from a nice young lady that works at the regional office stating that Ive been approved for a 70% rating in compensation (or roughly $1200+ a month). The best part being the 2+ years of backpay they owe me which comes out to roughly $30,000 give or take some. Tax free too!

I could get myself a pretty sweet coin collection going! hahaha

But most likely will let it sit in the bank until I find a nice house in a decent area and use most of it as a down payment.

But I may take a couple grand and invest in some coins, one I know I will be getting is the army gold commerative proof (as a veteran its a must have for me even if it is overpriced) as long as they dont sell out in the next couple weeks (probably how long itll take to finish processing my claim) with my luck they will.

Anybody got any lincoln cents they think are good investment oppurtunities? Any of the classic errors or hard to come by wheaties? They wouldnt be just investments but also part of my collection as Im missing most of the key dates/major errors.

Im still a little in shell shock, and dont know if I can fully believe its happened until the money hits my account. The next couple weeks will be sleepless nights for me!

congrates on getting your money. you asked about any lincolns being a investment. any early lincoln 09 to 33 in ms keep going up in price. there are lot of early lincolns G to EF the early lincolns in ms or bu are where the money is. they are quite expensive but in a few more years they will be even more expensive and are where i would put my money.

Congrats on getting everything resolved. I'm sure it must have been a long frustrating 2 years. I also hope your ailments are manageable and not too severe or restricting.
As far as the money, a house sounds good and if you wanted to spend a little on coins..well, for me I would find very high grade sleepers at lower than potential prices. Hang on to one for my collection and sell the others when they peak then turn around and look for more steady long haul investments like the early wheats in better grades. But thats just me.

I am glad the VA finally got off their but and gave you what you earned... I also am a disabled vet... I see nothing has changed since 1997 when I filed for an increase in my rating... Still slow as snails... LOL... Hopefully you can find some really good coins for investment purposes!!!

It seems that the serviceman and woman have to fight tooth and nail for every dollar that they deserve. Do you think that the politicians face the same battles? If you think yes, well I have a couple of hundred acres of flatland down here in Florida that I can make you a great deal on!

Good farmland is one of the better investments. You can lease it while it appreciates , you can grow food on it and it rarely ever drops in value. I wish I had some here for planting veggies and herbs. Check online and see the average increase in price over the past few decades. Just a suggestion.

Yes they are extremely slow, every month I would call and get the same answer, "your appeal is waiting review" finally I asked if there was any way to speed up the process. They said only way to do it was to send in proof of financial hardship. About a week after I sent my letter in is when I got a call from them (at about 6pm on a Friday, for those of you that dont know thats after hours for the VA) and the nice young lady on the end of the line was taking time out of here weekend and spoke to me for two hours. I knew then that I was in good hands. The first phonecall she said I was guarenteed 30% and maybe 50%. So when she called back with 70% I was stunned. She was a vet as well so I think she actually cares about her job.

I was actually thinking of looking for a fixer-uper out in the county with some acreage to it (if for nothing else a place for me to set up a mini shooting range). Ill have to see whats available around these parts. Lots of good farmland in the middle of kansas.

Thanks for the kind words everybody, and the investment tips. This really is a friendly little forum, just as I suspected from the first day I stopped in. I look forward to the years and years of my "finds" being nothing more than plating issues and MDD (hopefully Ill eventually be able to throw them back without posting them). mhahahaha

                          Thanks again,
