    Mis-strike or garage job?

Caution: the following text does not contain a thread related to the Lincoln Cent. The thread is about one of those "other" US coins... the nickel...

Here is an example of a 1985D 5 cents piece. An acquaintance showed me this and wondered if it was truly mis-struck, or if it was a garage (vice) job...

    Thanks for any comments...

Looks like a real error to me, but I can be fooled so easily. (LOL)

Pretty cool Allan, but for some reason something just doesn't seem to ad up here. Besides the obvious, I mean. Like to see what happens with this. Tom

I wish I knew a dime about these ones, as it sure looks like a doublestrike.

I agree Wendell, indeed it does look like a double strike.

Something does not look correct to me either but it appears to be a partial brokage (I believe that is the term)... One thing that looks out of place is the cud on the rev... There is no corresponding anomoly on the obv... The outer edge of the large piece appears to be cut and not broken away... I still lean toward the partial brokage... Can't wait to see what the pros say!!!

It has been double struck. Brockage applies to an anomaly that is formed when the coin is struck through another coin or part of a coin. In this case, the reverse was sitting (off centered) on a planchet when struck the second time. It also seems that there is a collar break on the reverse.

As BJ said, it's a double strike, with the second strike off-center and uniface. The bump at 7:00 of the reverse face of the normal strike could be a small cud or post-strike damage. It's impossible to tell from the photo. It's definitely not a collar break.
