When I switched from a 3.3 Megapixel to an 8 Megapixel camera, I saw a huge difference. I cannot comment on why it would be a waste to have more pixels. However, we are talking the amount of pixels in a fixed area and I would think the more the better.

PS - I should also say that the USB attachments are great for looking at coins but have short comings when trying to photograph a coin.

Thanks BJ and I am still working at it to get the best pics I can. Any input is welcome especially on the USB digital camera.

I would like to know more about this (short comings) since better pictures is the reason I'm thinking of getting the camera. Can you elaborate on it?

As a rule, the more megapixels, the better the quality. As for shortcomings in picture taking while not with observing with a usb scope, I don't quite understand. Just use PrntScr (printscreen) to copy a picture of your screen and paste in Paint. Crop it and I would think that would work fine. But then, I don't use a usb scope. I so need to update to buying a digital camera.

I use a AMSCOPE with 1x and 3x settings and with the 10x eyepieces you get 10 and 30 times magnification. I had a .3 meg camera that came with my scope when I bought it! Piece of junk. It took crappy pictures and broke very fast. I just upgraded to a 3 Meg camera and it is their new MU line of cameras. I am going to start playing with it this afternoon.
My scope also does not show the entire coin but at 10x ( AlMOST ) gets it in. I just take a pic of the whole coin with my Nikon D40X and then take my upclose pics with my scope. This adds a extra step but it is not that big of a deal.

As stated before AMSCOPE has some pretty good deals on ebay.

              Good luck!

You do the same as I do when using the AM Scope.

If you're going to sepend the money anyway, why not add $50 and get the one step camera.

What is the one step camera roller. Do you have a link. Like I said, I want to get the most bang for my buck when I get the one I get. Thanks
Coins are the only hobby you can spend all your money on and still have something to spend.

It might be hard, but if you brought your scope to a camera store during off-hours, maybe you could experiment and see which camera works best with the lens(es) on your scope. And I would agree more pixels is probably a better idea.

I mean one that will give you the whole picture. I've been looking harder and find that you need a 1/2.5 CMOS (image sensor) to get a 18 MM field of view with a reduction lens that is sold with the camera. This is a 5 meg. unit. I don't think it can be had in a 3meg. camera (though I'm not sure). Ebay sells the 5 meg. at about $225-250.

Your discussion spurred me to buy a new microscope. My present one only covers the range 7X - 35X. The top magnification is still too small to reveal critical details in certain specimens. The one I ordered covers 3.5X - 90X, which should be good enough to resolve a pimple on a gnat's nose. I also bought a 3 megapixel UBS camera to fit on the vertical ocular tube. We'll see if it's any good.

That should be a nice set-up Mike. Not trying to be nosey: Did you order from AM Scope?

I wold surely like to hear your opinion on the 3 meg camera. I'm about to bid on 5 meg. that ends tomorrow. If at all possible, your response before then? Thanks.

Yes, I ordered the items from Amscope. This is the scope I selected: http://store.amscope.com/sm-1tz.html. I won't get them for a few days.
