Help Grading an Indian Head Cent ...

Hi all. This is my first time posting in regards to one of my coins.

I happened to be looking at my Lincoln Cent collection from when I was a kid (a LONG, long time ago) and came across an Indian Head cent.

I've never attempted to grade a coin before, but wanted to take a shot at it. I'm hoping someone can tell me if I'm on the right track.

I'm giving this coin a grade of G-6. Reasons for this grade include: I can clearly see the denticles on the rim; all lettering on the coin is readable; while worn, I can make out the outline of all feathers on the headdress (although I cannot see any of the "Liberty" lettering).

    Am I close?

I do not like to grade coins by pictures but with your description along with the photos I would say you are pretty close IMO.

Thanks very much for your responses.

@1sgret, I understand why you would prefer not to grade coins this way. I'm only inquiring for educational purposes ... to see if I'm understanding the grading process and "what" I should be looking for when grading a coin. It's an interesting process!

No problem and I fully understand and yes it is an interesting process.

The missing metal from the obverse field is serious, even for a coin of lower grades. I look at this coin and think AG-3 because of the gouge on the obverse; the reverse maybe G-6.

If you go to some of the bigger coin shows, you can see both of those dealers. Both sites have great pictures.

I'll be going to this one, and they will probably be there: http://www.worldsfairofmoney.com/

I would grade the coin G4 or G6. I would need to see it in person to check for corrosion. I don't like the color of that coin.

I really should be going to this, but it looks like I will not be able to make it...
