Has anyone ever dealt with these guys before? I'm looking at a coin on ebay in one of these SGS holders... seems everything in an SGS holder on ebay has a high (perfect) grade...
Will the grade hold up if the coin is resubmitted to another grading service?
SGS - never heard of them. Where's that cheat sheet for all the false grading services.... Most likely, since the service is given a consistently higher grade, the coin will grade much less when submitted to the top services, if it isn't simply put inside a body bag.
Wendell Carper It's a bird! It's a plane! Aw nuts... It's merely two die scratches!
SGS is a self slabber that existed mostly on Ebay. SGS stand for Star Grading Service. I think it should stand for "Sh*t Grading Service"....which I think says all I need to say.
There are four grading companies that are above average when grading coins. PCGS, NGC, ICG and ANACS. Out of those four, only two have fair prices for encapsulating error and variety coins, ICG and ANACS. Since I know just about everyone at ICG, they are my favorite company.
I have dealt with this company when I just started out I will "ditto" what Brad stated. The coins I got were supposed to be 66-70. Not even close by a long shot. I have kept the coins just for proof. Please use other grading companies as suggested by BJ. Just a word of caution.
Is there a page that list all the varieties that are worth encapsulating? The page would probably have to list the appropriate varieties and the minimum grade as well. If there is no such page, I think we would all greatly benefit from such a tool.

Just use the CPG as a guide as well as LCR price guide. The grade alone doesn't determine if the coin should be slabbed. All valuable/rare coins should be slabbed.
