For me i started less then a year ago by finding old years like the 30s & 40s (these are canadians by the way) then i started learning a bout varieties and Errors. this was taght to me by Lara4228 my mentor parent and a very good friend.
I started collecting Lincoln cents in 1969. Got away from it for a few years then came back to it in 81. Started searching & collecting varieties in 1997. I jumped to another level about three years ago when I discovered Coppercoins and joined this forum.
Being able to attribute many of my own finds and learning everyday from all the experts here has allowed my hobby to really blossom to a very fun and rewarding one.

My LCR Photo Albumof Graded Lincoln Cent Cherry Picker Varieties
Hello and welcome
In 1983 my Grandfather passed and left me two rolls of Indian Head Cents. I was a Teenager and it sparked my interest. I started with thumb busters (blue whitman albums). One for IHC's, one for buffalo nickles, one for mercury dimes and one for lincoln cents. I got away from them for awhile and pcked it back up in my 30's. Now I an fascinated by errors and varieties of all types. Happy Hunting
I started about 2 years ago when I was faced with cashing in a large stash of pennies my father had put aside over the years. Just coins that he kept putting into various containers around the house until they filled up and then he would start another. I was very hopeful that I would find a '43 copper (that's about how much I knew about collecting back then). He also collected Morgans and all other silver coinage and I found what very much appeared to be a 1913 V nickel. Boy, that got me started on researching for sure. Next thing I knew I was looking for all kind of info on the net. Unfortunatley I did not stumble on this site until after I got rid of most of the penny stash. This site is the life blood of my collecting endeavor along with the search and info sites like CC, Traildies etc. I can't imagine how a neophite might have evolved in this hobby without these on-line aids. I venture to guess that it took much longer to amass the necessary and un ending knowledge and information.
Hi
Started when I was 8 years old - started collecting again in 2008 with my daughter. We found a error coin and wanted to find out what it was and found LCR!
Having fun since then.

I started collecting back in the mid 50's. I would go to my grandparents on weekends and they would sit at the kitchen table and go thru the coins from the cash register; from the resturant they owned. They were both collectors 2 complete sets of flying eagle, Indian cents plus the Lincolns to that point. At some point I was allowed to help sort also and later given a folder to fill from extras. Most memorable were a couple 22-d cents. Started searching for the 55DDO with no luck even though I knew 2 people that did. Eventually bought 1 PCGS AU58.

Well, It was a hobby that my Grandmother got me started in, Around 1985 when I was about your age Bear! I've stuck with the hobby, and it's been a fun, rewarding lifestyle! Always learning something new!
A friend of the family was a coin dealer. I started collecting when I was 9 or 10 back in the early 70's, because he once told me, and I quote: "You can never go broke collecting coins, because no matter what the market, they will always be worth face value, at the least."
I started collecting about a year ago. Barett you are partly the reason why! One Sunday afternoon you and the rest of the family were busy playing Xbox and I was bored listening to all the "roars" and "noise" from the game, so I pulled out my American savings and that is when it all seriously started for me.
Since then I've been learning and searching and enjoying this very intricate hobby ever since. I'm glad to see you on board and wanting to learn and collect also.
I started in 1961, school teacher got bunch of us boys interested. I collected until 1974, had small amount
of money to work with, I had coins strictly from change or what I traded for while in school. But my first
wife gave them away, it seems I spent time with them that i should have been giving to her. So i quit until
1995 when My present wife and I collected together. In '98 I got into doubled dies and RPM's and this is an
addiction for sure. The rush I feel when i find one is so cool! I cannot understand how two women can share
same birthday of Dec 16th and be so opposite as night and day. Ol' Jan's got set of Morgans, set of Trade dollars,
set of Peace dollars, set of american eagles and 12 piece gold type set. Wouldn't first wife loved to have given
those away..
when i was 7 years old i just loved going through my mothers change jar was not looking for anything but i loved the counting aspect you would be surprised what a mayo jar will hold in face value anyway i quickly grew out of it as times changed it became a forgotten thing i should explain here i was born disabled but fairly healthy so life went on well at 30 i found out i was diabetic ironically haloween night my health began slipping i spent 3 years in and out of the hospital well around my 34th birthday i began to feel nostalgic for things of my youth and better times and my niece who was 12 at the time asked me what i wanted well the mood i was in and thinking cheaply i thought ill tell her buy me rolls she did 3 dollars worth got a 1907 indian and i been hooked since
My Dad had a small collection of circulated silver US coins that he saved from his youth. That sparked an interest and at the age of ~ 10 I asked him to take me to a to a local department store so I could purchase my very fist coin (back in the day when department stores carried everything! There was even a Pet department.) where I purchased my first Mercury dime. The collecting bug has ebb and flowed over the years but I never forgot that trip.
