      Ahhh...gunshots and New Years. You should return fire.

      Here's to all that, and that wacky poet who gave us our New Year song.

      We twa hae paidl'd i' the burn,
      Frae mornin' sun till dine;
      But seas between us braid hae roar'd
      Sin auld lang syne.

      Just testing your old-school Scottish dialect. :p

                  Jody, it is not that bad, really. Unless you were breathing a lot of dust or licking it off your fingers, you needn't worry. Remember, even though you don't really see it, it is on every circulated cent (and coin except the 1943 steel cent) to some extent. The only difference is the quantity you have. BTW, the reason you don,t see it on the rest of the coins is because it wears away in their normal use. Guess where must of that stuff that wears away gets deposited!

                    Thanks RLM. Good to know that I'll live! There was a lot on the other coins as well. Just not as bad. Most of them had it around the rim and moving in towards the center just enough to cover the lettering. These were all old tubes of uncirculated Cents.

                      There is something called copper poisoning so be carefu when handling as many coins as we
                      do you do have to take the necessary steps in handling such as wearing gloves and wearing
                      protective gear.

                        WOW! That's REALLY cool! One of the better examples of a verdigris covered coin that I've seen. It does appear to be copper sulfate but I'm only guessing without analyzing it in the lab. The layer looks to be fairly young because it's flaking off so easily.

                        Verdigris is NOT going to harm you in any way unless you manage to ingest several grams of it. There's no need to freak about a few crystals, it's quite harmless at that level.

                            Thanks for chiming in Thad. From what I've been reading I would think copper sulfate too. If you want it for the verdigris files, just let me know and I'll send it to you.
