I think I might tackle nickels for a while

I have a ton and a half of cents and ill still brick search and buy what i can find useful. But nickels have next to nothing in the collection. Since there is no LCR for nickels im flying solo.. Ill throw questions out here and maybe some can help but should be interesting to see what comes from the box searches. I hope some nice CUDs appear.

Good luck, Jay. Lately I've been foreseeing myself getting into nickels one day to change things up. So there's no Jefferson Cent Resource or something similar? Is there a Nickelcoins.com? (Like coppercoins?) Does anyone know where there's a master list of nickel varieties? I assume it's not nearly as long as that for penny varieties.

I've been on and off Liberty Nickels for a few years... have used http://www.libertynickels.org/ as a good reference for varieties and keys. Very nice little reference IMHO.

Good Luck and buy the reference material and read up on it,so you don't miss anything.

One of the reference guides you should have is: The Best of the Jefferson Nickel Doubled Dies , 2nd Edition by Brian Ribar and John Wexler.

Here is a link to Brian Ribar Web site: http://www.briansvarietycoins.com/

Nothing against nickels and I do have a few but like dimes and quarters or halves, they do not seem to have the draw or varieties offered in the penny. I understand a little change to liven things up a bit (I wish my wife would let me get crazy with our neighbor down the street once in a while for a change of pace), but you will find after a time, just not what you thought it might be.

                Hi
If I decided to collect another coin - it would be liberty nickels. When I started collecting in 1958 - eight years old - my parents had a sweet shop. In a year or so I had collect almost every date - in the 1890's and 1900's. I even found a nearly uncirculated 1888! Your making me think about it again. It would be nice to put a vf-xf collection together - except offcourse the 1985!
                Thx

Nickels bore me. I've tried to get interested in them, but there's just something less than alluring about them. Of course, "to each, his own", but there's just something "nice" about copper.

                  Good luck.

I do have a 1939 Uncirculated. I wish it were the reverse of 38 or the Monticello DDR.

Next to Lincolns, nickels don't compare. I do enjoy collecting them though and it is nice to have a little change of pace once in a while. They aren't near as fun to go through, but there are some nice ones out there to be found.

Im hoping to find nice CUDs or die cracks and die chips. or grease filled dies. I have little maybe 8 pieces out of 1,683. so that is where things lack most. I figure its wortha shot .

I worked on Jeffersons for a few years and to me it just wasn't as satisfying as the Lincolns. I liked the varieties but it seemed you really had to buy early OBW rolls so you could get coins that weren't worn from circulation in order to p/u a lot of the doubled dies. I tried to concentrate on the steps as well, but full steps were far and few between. I finally put together a dansco using mostly Mint and Proof sets. To me, the nickles just didn't have the eye appeal or was as aesthetically desirable.
