Found this 1956 nickel in some pocket change and not really sure what it is. Although it is rough shape I can tell that the entire coin appears to be copper, even the rim. Is this possible or has some kind of chemical been put on it? At a loss here so any help will surely be appreciated. Thanks
I have been metal detecting for many years, and definately agree with Sean and Chris. Have dug countless ones like this that very acidic soil has basically "stripped" the coin. Bill
Thanks so much guys! After reading Sean's answer I looked at the coin again and still could not see the nickel shining through, I saw what I thought were some tiny white spots on it though. So I figured what the heck, he certainly knows a whole lot more than I do, so I took a pair of scissors and gently scraped the rim of the coin until finally I got to the nickel part. Thanks again, you guys are soooo smart!
