Cell phone do not call list - important

    Hi

Your cell phone number will become public and tele market places can have access if you don't register your phone on the national do-not call list.

Dial 888 382 1222 and register your cell phone on the national do not call list. Starting next month your number becomes public to tele markets. This. Is real.

    Thankyou

Roger, this is a recurring scam that has been around since 2004. I've been notified that telemarketers were getting my number countless times. Here is more information on this scam-

Rumors that cell phone numbers are going to be released to telemarketers if their owners don't sign up with the Do Not Call registry are false.

Agree with Sean, however, I do register my home and cell numbers on the "Do Not Call" list every 5 years. My 5 years ran out last month and I noticed the difference on my home phone very quickly.

        Hi
The info Sean provide is great. Although you can register your number it says that it blocks only a small percentage. It's not a scam where someone is taking your number.

But, I now feel like I'm not sure. Can you elaborate more Sean, am I right in my assumption?
        Thankyou
        Roger

...When I was doing marketing we had access to these "lists" that companies could buy. I even knew a guy that would buy lists, go out and stuff 500 envelopes with flyers and send them all out. The lists had all of your information on them and you could buy, for example a list of , oh I dunno subscribers to a coin magazine. BAM you have potential customers by niche.

The one company I was involved with had Phone numbers, address, some had billing histories, delinquents, customer since year, etc. It amazes me how simple surveys, registering for anything or or simply by doing business with certain companies , how simple it is for your information to be sold or shared to somebody else.

Try reading this. Maybe it will straighten out any confusion. (http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_publi...C-293502A1.pdf)

NO TRUTH TO RUMOR THAT CELL PHONE NUMBERS WILL BE MADE
              AVAILABLE TO TELEMARKETERS
Washington, DC -- For several years there has been a rumor circulating, mostly by e-mail,
that a nationwide directory of cell phone numbers will be made available to telemarketers, and
that consumers will start receiving telemarketing calls on their cell phones.
There is no truth to this rumor. Cell phone numbers are not being released to telemarketers,
and you will not soon be getting telemarketing calls on your cell phone. FCC rules prohibit the
use of autodialers and prerecorded messages to call cell phones without the consumer’s consent.
Thus, most telemarketers are barred from contacting consumers on their cell phones.
The e-mail spreading the rumor often suggests that consumers put their cell phone numbers
on the National Do-Not-Call Registry by going on-line at www.donotcall.gov or by calling 1-
888-382-1222. This is the correct contact information for the National Do-Not-Call Registry.
Consumers may register their cell phone numbers as an extra protection against unwanted
telemarketing calls, although most telemarketing calls to cell phones would be illegal regardless
of whether the number is listed on the Do-Not-Call Registry.
For more information on the government’s Do-Not-Call Registry, go to www.donotcall.gov.

I think RLM and Sean have hit upon the crux of the matter here. Cell phone numbers are not being made available to telemarketers as the original post stated. It's a viral lie that gets passed along from year to year.

And it got so viral that the FCC actually had to take some action.
