Looks to me as if there is a combination of MD and die deterioration...

I'm largely just detecting die wear - the type common to nickel and clad coins.

I go with die and circ wear... I have a few 5c and 25c that alot worse... The mint must have been cutting cost on those dies... LOL... Still a nice conversation piece!!!

I agree, die wear common to the larger denominations. I think there maybe MD on the back too, but I'm not sure. Those are AWESOME pictures though!!!!!!!!!
