    1859 Canadian Varieties

I picked up a small handful of Canadian large cent which included two 1859's...

Coin #1 - the 9 is thin but is set a wide distance from the 5.

Coin #2 - the 9 is thick but set closer to the 5

This is leading me to ask the question - What makes for the wide 9 variety? Wide (thick) digit or wide spacing between numbers?

    Thanks in advance

I'm no guru on Canadian cents, but do you have pictures of these?

I will post pics of the two coins I have - guess I was thinking they wouldn't be necessary. I was hoping somebody was familiar with the varieties for 1859 and could just say what makes the 9 wide or narrow...

      Thanks

        Greg,

Hmmm. I'll have to check out my foreign coins stash.

Discriptions and photo's corrispond well with the ones in "COINS of CANADA" by J.A. Haxby and R.C. Willey.

Here are the photos of my two coins - I really just dont know what signifies a Wide 9...

Trying to take some clearer pictures as well.

                Thx!

Wide is the 2nd coin and narrow is the 1st.

A wide 9 is the fatter one closer to the 5. Thats going off the site above. I dont have any interest in foreign coins or know anything about them or want to learn anything about them.

The first NINE is the Early form Narrow 9. The second picture is the Late form Narrow 9. The Wide Nine only occurs on the 9 over 8 variety the top of 9 is round and wide compared with the Narrow 9 which is oval.
