    Coin hunting in books

    Hello LCR Gang

It's been a while since I have posted or picked up the loupe, however I still pop on here to read up on the lasted finds
Recently I have been visiting a lot of used book stores and thrift stores trying to find old rare books and goodies that might be hidden inside. So far, I have only found book marks, odd notes and a possible murder confession that was stuffed inside a bible in the pages of Joshua 20, im not a bible expert... It kind of messed with me for a few days... lol
I have a homicide detective friend that is going to "look" into it.

Here is an article from earlier this year about a rare gold coin found in a book. I would have much rather find a rare coin verses a horrible crazy confession ;)

Interesting, it's fun reading coin articles written by non-coin people- things like this are said:

"The coin has been fashioned out of an exceptional cast, which features an ‘S’ character that is very different and makes the coin so extraordinarily special.... It was designed by coiner J.B. Harmstead and is undoubtedly striking with a very clean appearance."

That's just weird. I had no idea people hid things in books and forgot about them...

I don't know...but after reading Joshua, Chapter 20, it's good to know that I can kill my neighbor "unwittingly" and have a place to flee to. Now if I can just think of some "unwitting" way to do that. Wait...damn it!...there's a clause...it says that I can't have "hated him beforetime." Oh well, back to the drawing boards.

Your post literally brought the memory of the scent of shelves piled high with old books. Cool story Karah.

Wow, that is strange and slightly unnerving Be sure to also look in between the pages for cash, cause people would sometimes stick money in a book and forget about it.

lol Can you imagine finding money in a book! I think I would make a funny noise in the excitement of finding some... why is that so exciting?!! :P

Finding the confession letter was unnerving... I had to read it a couple times before I could believe what I had...

@ Jody I read part of the chapter tonight... pretty crazy!

Interesting topic. I used to work for my Step-Dad who was an auctioneer back in the 80s. One auction we had was for a retired school teacher who had never married and passed away in her early 90s. She rented a small house on an old farm and the owner of the property looked after her and as she had no living relatives, he became the Executor of her estate.

On the day of the auction before the sale started one of our regulars came up to me and handed me a baking soda can he had found in the back of an old upright pump organ that was to be sold. It contained 20 silver dollars from the 20s and 30s. A little while later another one of our regulars took me aside and told me he had found some cash in a couple of books that were in a box laso slated for sale. Well, these two incidents from the honest regulars created a mad rush for us working the sale and the Executor to conduct a somewhat hurried search of other items scheduled for the auction block.

We didn't end up finding too much more, and the sale went on without any other discoveries. The cash became part of the estate, and the coins were sold on the sale. Now, this next part of the story speaks well of the honesty of the gentleman who was her friend, landlord, and executor. I need to make note that her estate was split 20% to the Executor, and the other 80% to the State's Retired Teachers Home.

A couple of days after the sale the gentleman was cleaning her house to put it up for rent. This lady had lived there for many years and always kept it neat and tidy. Even so, the gentleman decided to vacuum out the cold air returns next to the baseboards in all the rooms. In the first one he bumped something with the long hose attachment. He layed down on the floor and reached back into the return to discover an old coffee can. Upon opening it he discovered that it was stuffed with cash! In total, after checking the other returns, he found six more cans with over $200,00.00 in cash hidden in them. It was quite obvious that this retired school teacher did not believe in banks, or ever had.

The executor did the right thing and reported the finds to the lawer overseeing her estate. He got his 20%, and the rest went where she had wished, the retired teachers Home. Crazy Huh?!?

Sorry to hijack your thread SA, but when you mentioned finding cash or coins in books it instantly reminded me of this story. Always check those books folks!!!! (and cold air returns!!)

Very interesting. As a hobby we go to storage unit auctions, much more fun before all the TV shows, if we win anything we do the same thing. Every book gets opened and checked. We have found a few things, mostly like you mentioned book marks, pics, leaves, just junk, but never that uncirculated 1928 $20 gold certificate. lol But a possible murder confession, now that is very interesting a treasure in it's own way I guess. Odd that a coin was in a book, but I would love to find something like that too. Good luck with the book searching.
