I know there are a few Canadian cent collectors here, so I was hoping for a little help. Here is a 1965 pointed 5 cent. My question is are these large beads or small beads? The beads are larger than on other Canadian cents I have, but they don't really seem to be uniform either. Also, the criteria I read about using the A in Regina to see if it points at or between the beads is inconclusive to me as well. It kind of looks like it could go either way to me. I just don't have any experience looking at these, so hopefully someone can give me a better idea. Thanks in advance.

The A is pointing to the bead....making them large beads.
Here is a little infor for others who might like to know the criteria.
Small Beads - Pointed 5 - Small beads : The A of REGINA points between beads.
Small Beads - Blunt 5 - Small beads : The A of REGINA points between beads.
Large Beads - Pointed 5 - Small beads : The A of REGINA points at bead.

Thanks, Rock. Yeah, that was the exact same info I was looking at, but it looks to me like it points at the left edge of one of the beads, so I am just not sure which way to call it. Here's the same pic with a line added.
edit. I see now where you are saying large beads. Thanks. Pointed 5 with large beads makes it the scarcest of the 4 types, I believe, and actually worth a few bucks.Attached FilesLast edited by willbrooks; 10-17-2012, 07:21 AM.All opinions expressed are not necessarily shared by willbrooks or his affiliates. I don't really collect these, so if anyone needs this for a collection, just say the word at it's yours. It is in wonderful condition. No wear and just a few light dings. Another coin that has been out of circulation and sitting in my jar for decades. All opinions expressed are not necessarily shared by willbrooks or his affiliates. I've got a growing pile of canadian small cents that I'll eventually go thru for variations, etc. Not sure what the market for them is like now or if it will get better over time now that they are no more.Rock

Well, after a little prodding on my part, our northerly neighbors finally upgraded to some photos. http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-...cent-1965-2012 What I have, after all, are small beads. Just goes to show a photo is worth a thousand words, especially when you have to account for perception on both ends. I find it interesting, yet not surprising, that the written diagnostic for large beads is "A points to bead," and for small beads is, "A points between beads." This is even worse than telling people to look for a 1970s date by looking at the height of the 7. At least that is actually true! I can already say a better diagnostic is to count the beads between the tops of the letters. WAY MORE APPARENT!Last edited by willbrooks; 04-11-2013, 10:39 PM.All opinions expressed are not necessarily shared by willbrooks or his affiliates. Taking them may result in serious side effects.
