Latrobe Coin shop helper, A Member or Not?

It was early this year that I got into errors and varieties. I started buying rolls from the bank, and searching. I took some of my "finds" (mainly MD and Die deteroration, sadly ) to a local coin shop in Latrobe Pa, "Treasure Hunt Coins"to see what they were, and what they were worth. At the time, I had little knowledge of how to use an eye loupe (I know, that is so pathetic, right??) but I still searched, using one of those 3"x 3" dome magnifiers. When I got to the coin shop, I asked the nice lady at the front desk if she knew anything about these "doubled dies and RPMs" I had found. She said, "hold on I will go get our helper who specializes in those" A moment later, a man walked out of the back room, armed with an eye loupe, and asked what I had. I said "some errors I want you to look at" he looked at them and most kindly gave me the bad news, and then explained to me all about errors, and varieties, and what I had, and how they were different, and showed me a BU 1995 DDO (even though I couldn't see the doubling clearly, as I could not figure out how to use an eye loupe) and we talked about errors, and varieties etc. But then came the moment that would change my life.... LITERALLY. He wrote down the web address, "www.lincolncentresource.com" on a sticky note, and handed it to me. For the next few months I spent much of the time I spent on the internet, (if not all of it) on the Lincoln Cent Resource. I learned the varieties, how to identify them, and even made a list and drew sketches of them to help me remember. Then, about a month later, I began investigating, "The Lincoln Cent Resource Community Forums" after a few weeks of close observations, I decided to join the site. I have not regretted it for one second. I have met countless generous, kind, people with a wealth of knowledge. words cannot explain how great people are on here! So I just want to say two things. First, THANK YOU LCR for everything you have done for me! Because of the knowledge I gained here, I have started a business that makes enough money for my Dad and I to buy groceries, gas, etc., something that has been absent in my life for years. Of course very generous people made sure we were taken care of in the bad times, but it is a different thing entirely to provide for yourself. Secondly, if you are reading this and believe you are the man who I talked to in that coin shop, Thank you!

so now that I typed like 1,000 words, I feel satisfied. Thanks LCR for changing my life for the better!

A nice story for sure. Thanks for sharing, Alex. Don't feel bad about not knowing about varieties and errors way back when, because everyone has to have a starting point to build on. I've really only been collecting for about 2 years, and knew absolutely nothing at the beginning. If you don't believe me, just check my really old threads. How much knowledge you have when you started is not as important as how much knowledge you have learned from the people around you.

Couldn't agree more, Alex. These guys are great. How sweet is it to have a panel of experts at your disposal, ready to help? That's why I felt I just had to make a donation to the site. I would suggest any who haven't go ahead and do so, too. It would really bum me out to log on to the net after a "big discovery" looking for verification on a big find. Only to find out they had to shut down for lack of financing.

Quite an interesting story Alex, and this is why I consider this site tops. People here have good hearts and are generous. I have not seen another like this one given the talent and resources available. Alex you just keep growing and that's admirable.
