I got a chance to visit my favorite Montana coin shop over the weekend. Unfortunately, the dealers Son was the only one there and he said he couldn't help me price anything out of the ordinary. This limited my options quite a bit, but forced me to branch out away from Lincoln's for once and I'm pretty happy with the results.
Under one of the tables, was a huge tupperware tub filled with at least 2,000+ 90% silver half dollars. Mostly '64 Kennedy's and cleaned/trashed walkers and Bens. Anyway, I asked about those and was told they were destined for the smelter and I could have any one I wanted for $11 each. I only had about an hour to search, but I got through several hundred Kennedy's looking for some doubled dies. In the end, I found 5 nice DDO/TDO's from three different dies.
In addition, after my last handful, I noticed a 2x2 buried in the pile. After pulling it out, I saw this toned beauty. I must say, it is one of the prettiest Kennedy's I have ever seen. Awesome toning on both the obverse and the reverse and very few contact marks. I was sure I would have to pay a premium on that one, but no - $11!! I am definitely considering sending this one in and NOT to the smelter - thank God for that!! I am also looking for opinions on whether its worth slabbing if anyone cares to chime in. I know my pictures are not that great, but it is sure stunning in hand!
While I was disappointed at first by not being able to search through a bunch of Lincoln's, I sure came out smiling in the end! I do wonder what I left behind to be melted before I will get a chance to go back, though
