Here's an 1878s that was purchased as a fake.I keep it as a reference coin.Note the sandy/grainy appearance and the weight is only 19.5 g.Many have this type of appearance.The counterstamp on the original coin posted looks like Chinese characters?
Noticeable differences from the OP's coin. (VERY Nice photo's by the way.)

Here are some interesting tips on spotting a fake. Notice picture #3 and the "oval berry".
Roger, I went to PCGS Photograde to look for 'oval' berries, and some had them and some did not. Maybe there were different designs on certain years or mints? I don't really know.

The quality of the coins was never very good. They had problems with high relief details from day one. The dies were retooled but I'm not sure they ever truly corrected the problem. There were other quality problems too. Basically the whole run of the coin was one big problem so I wouldn't doubt minor design differences that are still all legitimate.
I don't see anything that would make me think the coin is counterfeit. Certainly many counterfeits exist, but that's not a reason to assume anything. Everything about the coin in the beginning of the post suggests authenticy.
