A question regarding TPG's and submissions

    Hi folks,

One of my goals this year is to submit a coin to a coin to a TPG for grading. I recently picked up an XF-AU half dime at a good price and want to send it in. Right now I am considering NGC. I didn't realize you need to be a member to submit coins, though. I'm thinking about the best (cheapest) way to send it in. I took a trip to a local shop who helps people submit their coins, and they gave me a quote of $100+ to submit through them. For that price, I might as well shell out an extra $25 and get the NGC premium membership which gives me 5 free submissions. That being said, I only have 1 coin I currently want to submit at this time, so I feel like $125 to submit only 1 coin right now is a bit too much. Any help here? I am lost as to what I should do. Again, I'm looking for the cheapest way to submit a single coin in for grading, whether it be signing up somewhere, or paying someone to send it in for me.

    Thanks,

    Simon

If you become a member of the ANA then you can send coins to NGC directly... You can send coins to ANACS directly and there's no membership. PCGS is a whole different story. Sending 1 coin almost isn't worth the shipping costs. It's going to cost you the same amount to ship 1-4 coins both ways. so you might as well wait til you have enough to make the cost worth it.

I totally blanked on ANACS for some reason. They are definitely another one to consider.
In your experience (anyone can chime in here), how harshly does ANACS grade vs the few other "top" TPGs?

          Simon- FIND ANOTHER DEALER!

A direct submission through a B&M dealer shouldn't cost you more than $35 for a normal coin at NGC. If you're trying to get a variety attributed, there are extra costs, but $125 is outrageous. What that dealer was telling you is he had no interest in helping you submit a single coin, unless you put $100 in his pocket. Take it any way you want, but I'd never step foot in that shop again.

Try another local dealer. That's what you should pay have to pay for NGC.

ANACS is easier, you can submit directly and it'll cost you less than $15 for the single coin. BUT- you'll have a $28 shipping and insurance charge, for 1-20 coins submitted. You've received some good advice, I'd agree and say you should save up and send several at the same time to save on the shipping and insurance charge.

Nope, wasn't going for any varieties. It was just a single coin. They gave me a quote of $100+, saying that they charge $30 up front for the service of going through them, then charging me the cost of actually submitting it (another $30), insurance, shipping, plus some mumbo jumbo that kicked the price up...Name is Pacific Precious Metals. That's the last time I go there! Unfortunately, they are the closest registered NGC submission assistant I could find on the NGC dealer locator. I'll look around some more and definitely read up on the TPGs, though. I really appreciate all the info!

Forget the "locator"- Just start calling. You'll find that most B&M dealers are both PCGS and NGC dealers.

I have a few places in mind I'll be visiting this week. Thanks again, Chris. Don't know what I'd do without ya.

I had a PCGS Dealer talk me out of submitted one coin once for the exact same reasons stated above. Of course, he also said that the fake 1909-S VDB I wanted to submit "looked real." Needless to say I just joined PCGS myself.

You should talk to more dealers.
Some are more fair, if they are fair with you and you get some savings on postage if they send in a group then it's not bad.

I think you need to find the right dealer.

I got a good offer from someone who can send it in to PCGS for $25-30. Thanks again for all the help, folks. I'm going to go visit the LCS soon just to see what they would quote for NGC.

I have been wanting to send in some coin to pcgs to see if what i graded it compared to them. ofcourse these are the very best coins if you want we can figure something out to split cost per ratio of coins. Something to that effect. I have been wanting to join for a bit.
