Just attended a local coin show.

First one I had ever been to. A lot of really nice people wanting to sell me anything they had. One of the main things that left me speechless was the lack of basic knowledge of some of the dealers. I remember seeing posts about it before but I didn't know how bad it really was. I was sitting there wondering "Should I correct him or should I just continue looking through his coins." I chose to continue looking through the coins as I figured that it's probably only going to increase my odds of finding something actually valuable. All in all... got to meet some nice and interesting people, got some coins, rolls, and some pvc-free flips for a fraction of what I paid on Amazon so a pretty good experience for a first time. Also got an invitation to a local coin club so I am a happy camper for today.

It really is amazing the lack of knowledge on varieties. But that just re-enforces the fact we belong to a very select club.

I usually look through what I want to...IF I find something I don't want to buy or 2 or more of something else I buy 1 and then tell dealer about the other coins...sending to the info..be it book or website... tell them they my make extra money listing it as the variety and selling it on e-bay or in a special case..... the next time I see them... they invite me to find more that they can sell for more...
some take it well..some say they don't care....then I keep going....

enjoy the shows..you can get info and coins and learn new things at shows and club meetings....

I never bothered telling any of them anything, since a vast majority don't know, don't care, and are usually buttheads about it. I just went doing my thing and bought what they had marked at the price they had it marked for. If they offered a discount I would take it, but would never ask for one. It generally pays to ask for their 'error' coins if they have any. At the last show I attended a couple of years ago, I bought a dozen examples of 1959D-1MM-001 and 1960D-1MM-001 in BU for $1 each...and they guy had them marked at $2 each. He gave me a discount since "That crap never sells".

So far it's still definitely a buyer's market...if you know what to get and where to get it.

I noticed that as well. The idea I ran into the most with the dealers was "it's not valuable unless its a wheat cent or indian head."
I searched for what I could with my cheapy loup but it didn't prove to be successful so I bought some proofs and a 60P small date and then some bu rolls of 59D, 63D, and 64P/D (They were a good deal I thought that averaged out to $1/roll with the plastic tubes included).

There's going to be another show in the next town over October 5th that I plan on going to. From what the people said there will be more tables there. I will also go to a meeting at the coin club to see what that's like. On the bright side, Coppercoins.com was mentioned to me! I thought I had met another variety hunter but then they tried to sell me a die chip inside the D mint mark as a RPM.

Where was the coin show at Matt? I have been trying to find some in the KC area with no luck.

This one was in Carthage, Mo. The one October 5th will be in Joplin, Mo. When I visit the coin club, I will see if I can find anyone that knows about any shows in the Kansas City area.

Shows in the Kansas City area:

There was a show held once monthly on Sunday only on the East side of KC (Clarion near the ball park). Not sure if they are still doing it, but when they were, it was called the "ARC" coin show, and I believe was led up by a dealer from Liberty.

Additionally, the Carthage show used to be every February, July, and November - I think.

Springfield used to have a show every October at the fairgrounds up off I-44. Ozarks Coin Club would know about that one.

A show was in the community center in Lenexa on about the second weekend of October every year. I loved going to that show.

There's a show once in a while in Pittsburg Kansas. I think Rex and Cindy Phillips out of Chanute would know something about that.

There are also shows in Tulsa, Wichita, Little Rock, and St. Louis that I used to attend.

Anyone who cannot find a show to go to within 200 miles of Joplin at least once a quarter isn't looking in the right place for their information. And speaking of that, there are almost ALWAYS flyers advertising upcoming shows in the front lobby of every show you attend. Make sure to check them out. I used to plan future show just by looking at those flyers and keeping up with the show calendars in Coin World and Numismatic News.
