Cool recent pick up - 2 cent piece.

    Hello all,

I picked this coin up recently after noticing that it was a re-punched date. After researching it for a while, it sounds like RPD's for 1868 2 cent pieces are pretty scarce. I wonder if this was because the dies failed early? This coin is literally covered with die cracks including a nice retained cud on the reverse. It is in pretty terminal die state in my opinion which makes me even more glad I bought it. I paid $60 for it. Does anyone have a copy of Kevin Flynn's book The Authoritative Reference on Two Cent Coins to help me match a die number? Thanks for any help on this!

Nice RPD. I like RPDs a lot. I always look for them on pre 1909 coins.

John, this is something I would normally be able to help you out on. I love two cent pieces and have a few repunched dates. However, all of my reference material is packed up ready for my big move in a couple of weeks. I did have this 1865 in an airtite I haven't packed up yet. It too has lots of die cracks, especially over all the letters OF AMERICA. It also shows significant Longacre doubling on the reverse. Does yours have that as well?
Almost all 2c pieces I own have similar anomalies. The one below is in the CPG and is identified as FS#2c-002.7 (Old Number).

If you still haven't got this yours figured out by the time I complete my move, I will help you figure it out.

Thanks everyone and thanks for the help offer Bob. Hopefully, I won't need it as I think this coin has spurned me to buy Flynn's book. I really need to beef up my library anyway. From what I'm learning so far, the 2 cent piece series is loaded with varieties. Good luck finding any good online references for them though! It makes me appreciate Coppercoins all the more!

I have the book ...."Getting your two cents worth" a 1994 book by Kevin Flynn..
listed as KF-7-RPD cross reference BR2395..Walter Breen ..(this cross reference also listed for die number 1)
                Rarity listed as common
                Repunched date...
repunched 1 seen above the top of the 1
repunched first 8 seen above the middle and the top of the 8

KF-1-TPD and KF-7-RPD both show die cracks through the date
KF-1 has it out the right side of the 1 ABOVE the height of the left line at the top of the 1
KF-7 has it out the right side of the 1 EQUAL TO the height of the left line at the top of the 1

the book shows 10 rpd and 1 proof rpd
