I've seen this numerous times, and now curiosity has gotten the best of me. I have items for sale on Ebay and when I access my "active items" page, some of them are showing as many as 5 bids, but the price is still at the opening bid. Have any other sellers noticed this? Any explanation as to how an item can have 5 bids and yet still be at the opening price?
Thanks,
Jody
“What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.”
A lot of times the same bidder will bid multiple times to try and scare off other bidders. If the same bidder keeps upping his bid, the bid count will go up, but the high bid will not. I've seen bidders bid 40 times in a row just so the bid count will be high. I personally think its dumb, it should raise the bid count only when they are outbid, but eBay doesn't agree.
They can all be distinctly different. You offer a coin opening for $0.99 and one bidder bids $1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $6, $7, ...... Each bid is different, but the price remains at the opening bid. But if someone bids $2.99, he now has the bid for $3.00.
Anything that makes the eBay market look larger is good for their business model. Not something they'd change. Certainly it is something to discuss from an ethics standpoint. Good question to bring up, as they should be questioned for allowing that possibility to exist.
