I just found this 1896 Indian Head Penny in a roll of pennies from my bank. It look like it is in very good condition. However, it has a lot of material built up on it that hides some of the lettering and date on the obverse. Should I try to remove that material and if so how should I do it? Thanks, Joel

Enamel7, It's amazing to see a 128 years old Indian Head penny come rolling out of the plastic bank roll! That is the 2nd Indian Head penny I have found in a bank roll during the past 5 weeks or so that I have been doing this. It would be interesting to find out how these pennies ended up in bank rolls after 128 years. Thanks, JoelComment

Nice find Joel! Hope it cleans up well for you. The "P" word is prohibited around here... well not really, but the proper word is cent. The only time I use the word penny is when I am dealing with the bank, if you ask for Lincoln cents they look at you like you just ordered something off the menu

Don't listen to them, Joel. It is perfectly fine to call them pennies, and I am the terminology police around here. It is the most commonly used term to describe them used in the United States. After all, you don't walk around calling nickels "Five Cents," do you? Well, do you? Of course you don't, but that is what it says on the coin! So how about we all cut out the "cents" enforcement thing already? Who's with me?!!!Nice find Joel! Hope it cleans up well for you. I dunno about this whole "cent" thing. All the boxes I get say $25 Pennies on the outside and all the wrappers say .50 pennies. They must be pennies... ;)Comment

Joel - Just curious, were there any other older coins in the batch with this one? Usually when I find IHC's they are accompanied by a decent amount of wheats, several of which are usually earlier dates.Comment

I'm glad you asked furry because I didn't want to sound like I was bragging, but yes I found 26 wheat cents in that same brick and the roll that had the 1896 also had 2 wheats. In addition, I found a 1985 D/D rpm 1 in that brick. I doubt that I'll ever repeat that. Again, thanks for asking. JoelComment
