I just recently purchased an 1853 large cent with what looks like a late state strike through die cap on obverse. I have been unable to find examples of this error on large cents and was wondering what kind of value these would have. I will post some pics tonight when i get it.

It is difficult at best to assign a value without some photos. It may turn out to be something other than a struck through. As soon as you can post your photos, it will give us a better idea of what your coin is, and what is may be worth.Bob Piazza

While I've never before seen a large cent struck through a late-stage die cap, the stretched-out denticles and uniformly blurred design would seem to support this diagnosis.Comment

Ok so from what I've read, there are only a handful of large cent die caps to exist so I'm assuming that would make the strike throughs fairly rare as well. Would this be something worth getting graded?Comment

The problem I see with this coin is that is it not round. On both sides it looks like something was done with your coin?Richard S. Cooper Some have asked about my images I use, and I'm glad to say I've completed a DVD of these. Ask if you are interested. Newer members like these.Comment

This is the only thing I could dig up on values....not saying it is correct, but something to look at anyway :http://coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq/coins?main_coin=11929Comment

I would try taking it to a coin show where the TPGs are in attendance and get a in hand opinion.

It is not perfectly round, its shows some unevenness all around but the thickness of the coin is fairly consistent and the diameter is correct. Also doesn't show signs of being crushed or hammered. The weight is way off however, it only weighs 7.33 grams, so I'm not sure whats going on with it.Comment

Possible split planchet after strike? The reverse looks strong and the obverse looks like a split off that side. Same thickness as a normal large cent?Richard S. I think it is thinner than a normal large cent but not by much. I don't have it with me right now but i will look later to confirm.Comment

The abnormally low weight certainly shakes my confidence (never that strong to begin with) that this is a genuine error.Comment
