Not sure but die polishing can make letters look further apart.

Try looking at 1999 and 2001 dimes to see if there is a change in design.

I'm going to agree with GrumpyEd in thinking its from die polishing. I have an old book that lists all kinds of minor oddities and it contained numerous listings for spaced AMs from AMERICA on dime reversed. They are all from over abraded dies

So sad ... My reverse consumption engine was a broken fuel gauge ... gonna look at coins now. John

It appears to be die wear/polishing and circ wear... During circulation the devices can wear down to the point they appear to be Class 6 doubling... Also s the die wears down and gets polished the devices can loose that sharp looking effect!!!

The top left of the E looks polished VS my 2000 D dime
all other indications look as a normal spacing to my 1999,2000,2001,2002, and 2003 P and D dimes.
I know of no wrong design dies used on any 1999 to 2003 dimes ( no proof only dies used on circulation strike coins )
I see no evidence here to see any special or different dime used on this coin
            Sorry
