    1977 dime no mint mark

    I have found this dime in circulation it seems to shiny and good to be true I need help on determining if it is fake this dime is not magnetic how ever looks like it's from a proof set but missing a cameo finish need help on determining

    this dime has absouletly no copper in it doesnt the ridged edges show a ring of copper this one is a silver color all over could it be from something else i was thinking some sort of silver set

      I'm pretty sure the P wasn't added to the dime until 1980, so all dimes before that minted in Philly had no mint mark.

      Looks like it may have been plated by someone. People do these little science experiments all the time. Although, I can still see the die flow lines on the reverse, so I'm not positive.

        I agree with Will... With the die being worn so much I do not believe the mint would have used the dies for mint sets!!!

          I agree, it might have been plated. You'd have to weigh it on a jewelry scale to see what the weight was. Silver is 2.5 grams and clad is 2.268 grams - if it were plated the weight could mimic silver. Then you would have to look at it under scope to see if it was plated or not. It is common for people to experiment with plating using pocket change. And there were no silver dimes at this point, so it would be very hard to explain - it could be the copper layer is thinner than normal and not visible. I could hypothesis but I need to know the coin's weight first...
