Hello everyone,
I ran into town after work on Tuesday to get rid of a bunch of searched zinc cents. As I was getting out of my car in the bank parking lot, I saw an older gentleman carrying a heavy sack through the front door. "Dang it", I said, thinking that he had just beat me to the only coin counter. As I watched him from the customer line, I could see that he was actually turning in several hundred dollars in Ike dollars in plastic tubes - around $300 total. What the heck, I thought, I might as well pick up a few just in case. The fact that they were in tubes gave me a (false) sense of hope. I ended up buying a $100 dollars worth, unfortunately without the tubes which would have been a nice bonus. I figured I would hope for some silver, check them for varieties and deal with them from there.
Long story short.... I ended up with solid date rolls of 1971-P, 1972-P, 1974-D and 1976 (x2). No silver, but I did find one variety, what I think is a 1971-P WDDO#1, pictured below. This DDO must be fairly common for me to be able to find one in such a small group of coins, but it was a fun find nonetheless. Unfortunately, now I have to figure out what to do with the rest of them! I plan to save some of the better condition ones to give out to kids at coin shows which was done for me when I was starting out. I may try selling the rest in lots on eBay? They seem to bring a slight premium there. Alternatively, I know that I can get a lot of weird looks spending them around town as a last resort
. Just another story in the "Tales from the bank," saga, but at least I got a new variety for my collection
! Happy searching!
John
