So with a mintage of around 2,000 this coin commands high prices even in G4. With that being said I'm sure this coin has been counterfeited more than a few times. What's the most common or easiest pick up on a counterfeited coin. Are there certain things I should be looking for like an altered 1858. I ask this because I am going to go take a look at one tomorrow after work. If I got some pictures and posted them up maybe some of you more familiar with this era of cents could maybe help me out. I really would rather not get burnt by a counterfeited coin.

I would typically just Google "Genuine 1856 Flying Eagle" and come up with half a dozen articles on counterfeit detection, but by all means post some pics and we'll help you as well. It always helps to have extra eyes with this stuff.Comment

Here's some pictures of the coin in question. The spacing between AM looks correct. I'm on the fence about the squareness of the inside of the O in oF. Unfortunately looking at the date it looks altered to me. It is pretty worn but it just doesn't match up with any of the authentic coins I've seen pictures of.

The date looks awful...that alone would scare me away....and the fact that it isn't in a slab....to me, that is a no brainer for any valuable coin with wear like we see here.Comment
