An Interesting "Zincoln" - Gettysburg Address

My parents bought a bunch of these from a local artist several years ago and gave them to me. I had forgotten all about them until I was cleaning up my coin desk this evening. Each one is struck on a zinc planchet, the same size and weight of a Lincoln cent. The entire Gettysburg Address was then laser engraved in the profile of Lincoln's bust. Kinda cool. Thanks for looking

    Neat!

I wonder why they didn't make the blank more smooth before doing it.

I agree that is very neat.

Looks like those are type1 blanks (no rims yet). And those parallel lines on them may be what Will is looking into on the planchets that I keep erroneously referring to as roller lines.
Or 95% coppers sanded down to the point they weighed 2.5 grams since there are no rims. "Zincoln's" would have the zinc showing from sanding.

It looks like 60 grit. I'm surprised they didn't find something smooth.

I'm thinking that the artist just punched the blanks from a sheet of zinc. You can find a 36"x120" sheet of zinc on amazon for 250 bucks. Would've been nice had they been buffed/polished beforehand though.

They are not type 1 blanks, nor are the parallel lines what Will is working on. You can still see the area where the rims were ground down. It is really neat what was done, but we are sure being critical on the canvas he chose I hardly think the backdrop was what he wanted people to see. I really think it's very cool though.

The reason the roughness is interesting is that it looks like it had a rim but was filed/sanded away. It could have been a type 2 or it was a regular cent. My guess is that it was a regular cent.

Why do you think it's zinc? If it was zinc and you file the rim and bust away then it would look like silver or a cameo with silver where the bust was. I'm thinking it looks like a copper cent filed down if the color is like the pics, maybe the weight reduced since the other side looks like they took it down enough that the rim is gone.

Sort of makes it neater to me that it might have started out as a regular cent. If it was simply punched out of a sheet I'd expect it to be smooth. I'm thinking the artist put extra effort to make it based on a Lincoln cent

The artist told my parents that they were based off Lincoln cents and that he used zinc blanks the same size and weight as cents. He didn't say anything about them being actual cents that were used. I imagine that it was just a roll of industrial stock that was used.

That is awesome... Depending on when these were made some lasers on the lower end of pricing would require a ruff surface to engrave lettering this small... Notice how the side with lettering is ruff and the opposing side is much smoother... If you have others with lettering on the smoother side just disregard my comments as BS except for the AWESOME comment!!!
