Have done some research and understand that there are many mistakes on cents in this date but have only been able to locate the large over small variety. Is anyone familiar with this variety? Despite appearances this is a chocolate brown cent on both sides.

The most prevalent variety for this date is the Large 47 over Small 47. There were some issues with the date orientation (how close it was to the bust) The old Newcomb numbers 36 and 43 (I think) were used to denote this. There were also some minor repunched dates with FS-LC-1847-301 (003) and FS-LC-1847-302 (004) being included in the 5th Edition CPG.Bob Piazza

I have only mapped 4 1847 Large Cents. N-18 is close but yours doesn't appear to match any of my mapped varieties.Comment

N-3 looks good. There are those here better versed in large cents than I so please correct anything I post that is incorrect. I believe it was 1836 when the mint introduced the French Portrait Lathe. This allowed the creation of a master hub which allowed the mint to carry a standardized coin design forward from one year to the next. Of course this master hub didn't include the date. Just as the case for the mint mark on Lincoln Cents; the date on large cents was punched into the working die. This allowed the mint to carry forward unused working dies into the next coin production year. Being the date was punched into working dies its positioning relative to the other design aspects of a coin is not static from one working die to the next.Comment
