Can you tell me what I spent my money on?

I was really floored this evening when I received an email from a buyer on EBAY, I will quote the email here:

    "Dear my2centsnet,

I just took a close look at the coin and I can;t see where it is a double die.when you send the coin will you put a note with it and explain where it is? Thank you!"

I will leave this buyer as Mr. Anonymous. But I ask the Forum...what are your thoughts about this interesting question. This is a serious matter to me as I want to show this buyer the best aspects of our very entertainng and interesting hobby.

I would ask the forum members for some good suggestions as to how to explain this to the buyer, keeping in mind that we want to be good ambassadors for our hobby and do not want to kill the buyer with information overload. I have some ideas but suggestions are surely welcome.

    Thank you,

    Jeff

Tell them it has now become a requirement that they become LCR members and also buy one of the many good books on doubleD dies.

What class of doubled die did they purchase? If it is class VI good luck explaining it...

Not only is it a class 6 Jason it is the 1989 1DO-005 , 5-O-VI (I'm Screwed), which is basically not visible to the uninitiated. What the heck am I so supposed to do? This EBAYER will probably think I am crazy or worse yet that I am trying to rip him off.

At least the buyer was honest...but they are putting you on the spot. Buyers should buy what they know about it...LOL. I have 1989 1DO-005 - already shot I believe - I can post pics tomorrow if that would help...

I would print the listing for that die and send a copy with the coin.

Any time you can show a pic, it can be beneficial. If the variety is already listed, send them the link to where it can be seen. Sometimes, putting comparison photos of a normal coin side by side with the variety coin will be convincing enough to most people.

Why did they buy something they have no idea about? This kind of eBay bidder really bothers me. Don't be surprised if they demand a refund and still leave you mediocre feedback. Good luck...

I agree, thats like ordering something from a French menu then asking what it is when you get served. Makes no sense to me.

I had that problem a couple of times.First thing I always ask is do you know what this coin looks like? Have you ever seen one? Then I would send more pictures to there email. Then if they still have problems after pictures I would refund there money and ask for the coin back. Both times the people sent me a check to keep it.I then email and told them I am trying to work this out and each time all they wanted to keep them happy is a color picture of the coin with arrows showing the details.I am glad I saved the pictures of the coin. Both times I got a positive feedback.I don't know if this will work for you.

Update: I sent this letter to the buyer along with the coin...

                    Buyer,

I received your email and here is what I am going to do for you. I am going to jot down a few details in this letter and show you a couple of links to some websites. I am also going to suggest that if you are to take an interest in this fascinating, challenging, and extremely enjoyable part of the coin collecting hobby you should buy the following books and periodicals. These will help to explain a little about doubled dies and re-punched mint marks and other type varieties.

First you should buy Looking Through Lincoln Cents by Charles Daughtrey, then you should go online to www.coppercoins.com. This is Chuck Daughtrey’s web site and both he and Bob Piazza contribute many hours of their time to updating and maintaining an extensive online catalogue of the different die varieties for each year. I think that it is important that you understand that ERROR coins and DIE VARIETIES are two different animals. The following is an excerpt from the copper coins web site about the coin you purchased from me and I quote,

“1989P-1DO-006 a Class 6 Doubled Die which has Moderate extra thickness with some separations lines show on the date. Light to moderate extra thickness on LIBERTY and the motto.”

You will find a lot of what you need at the CONECA website. CONECA isthe main club for die varieties and error coins in the United States.

                    http://hermes.csd.net/~coneca/

It is important that you should also purchase The RPM Book by Dr. James Wiles as he is basically the top gun in the field. These books should get you started. I really think that after you get started you should also join The Lincoln Cent resource at http://www.lincolncentresource.com/ and you may even find me lurking around the corridors of this vast web site full of great knowledge and ideas.

That is the answer to your question and if you go to the copper coins website there are example pictures of the coin. I must say to you that you bought a very minor Doubled Die from me and that troubles me. I say this because when people feel that theyare being deceived it causes issues and rightly so. I assure you that this coin is what Isay it is. If you want a better example of a doubled die. I can provide another coin. I want you to enjoy the hobby and $15.00 should not prevent you from doing so.

I am willing to sell you another coin at a reasonable cost to you and outside of my usual business at EBAY. A Lincoln Cent that has a more pronounced doubled die, one that you should be able to see without issue, providing you have a loupe or microscope. I do have to look at my collection to see what I have available for this purpose.

I also suggest that you get a inexpensive microscope that you can use to look at your coins, you can find them on EBAY. Look for USB Microscope. These actually takePhotos too. You may contact me anytime to discuss this or anything relating to coin collecting and Numismatics.

Well anyway I hope I have answered your question and enjoy your coin,

                    Thank you,

                    Jeffrey P. LaPlante

Nice reply to the buyer Jeff. Too bad the buyer couldn't have looked just a little more...and read a little more too.

It seems the buyer was immediately regretting buying the coin the second they realized they had won. Hopefully in the future they stay very far away…

Just give the person his money back. You have done WAY more than anyone else would have done. Feel good in that you tried to do everything to satisfy him. There should be no negative feedback for this sort of communication.
