    The different faces of Lincoln

Some time ago coop shared photos of two different faces of Lincoln that are used on the 1997 cent. Since then I have wondered and keep forgetting to ask, how many faces are there? If anyone can direct me to an old post, or if coop can get his archives out on this it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a CD-ROM that Trails put together back in 2006 that shows the different hubs used to make the cents... 1909 to 2006
I believe it was for CONECA.. I am sure he still has the copy rights for it
might try to send him a message..

Are there 2 different 97 obverses?
Can someone post it if there is.

Lincoln's portrait was redesigned for 1969. That's really the only major change. There have been some minor touch ups along the way that you can see here http://www.varietyvista.com/Lincoln%...%20Changes.htm

GrumpyEd, this is the post I was referring to from coop. One coin is my 1997 that I thought was a doubled ear and the other photo is of the actual doubled ear.

            Coop's post

Thank you Maineman for the link! I searched it, but I did not find the specific changes for 1997 (will go back and check again, need more coffee first)

The 1997 showed on the left is a doubled ear example compared with a normal coin from that year with machine doubling or contact on the ear lobe. I was wondering what you were mentioning?

Those are not design changes you are talking about...a doubled die is a mistake while making the die

Coop sorry for the confusion. In the linked post I thought you were referring to the two coins being from different dies because the eyes were different. I'm still a bit confused... but that is normal for me

Vivien- if you'll buy a $5 copy of Strike it Rich, the book has a chapter on the minting process that would clear up a lot of the confusion you're encountering on how coins are made.

If you don't mind the 3rd edition of Strike It Rich vs. the newest 4th edition, you can download it in .pdf format from the publisher here-

I don't believe that the information on the minting process has changed in the newest edition.

FYI- The 3rd edition is far superior- the 4th edition was rushed to print by the publisher before it was ready, and finished by a non-coin person editor- there are glaring errors that will make you angry, seriously. Get the 3rd edition!
