1988 D think it is machine doubling.

I got exited when I first looked at this with the loupe, but under further investigation
I think it is machine doubling because the serifs are not split. just wanted to get a second opinion. not to confident in mine yet.

That I think is Die Deterioration Doubling but unfortunately still not a doubled die. The good thing is you are seeing and knowing this! Learning every day is my motto!

What you are seeing at Liberty and Trust is die deterioration doubling which is different from machine doubling. MD is flat and shelf like. At the mint mark, that is split plate doubling. Here is a link to die deterioration doubling with some photos http://www.lincolncentforum.com/die-...-doubling-ddd/

And here is split plate doubling, there are some pics there too http://www.lincolncentforum.com/terminology-list-s/

Hang in there with us and keep doing what you are doing, this is the best way to learn!

Deterioration doubling and split plating on the D.

On the motto/UST I think it also may have another form of die deterioration called a "ridge ring".
88-89 are bad for split plating, bad plating, deterioration, ridge rings, ghostly doubling of all sorts.

          Ridge Ring from glossary

Thank you zktk01 for selecting my answer! You know... when I first started searching Lincolns, I remember when I first saw split plate doubling under my loupe and I was so excited that I had found something different that I had never seen before! And, every day we keep seeing new things and learning!
