I made an attempt to photograph several 1972 DDO die 003s and 008s to show similarities and differences. Both are a CW (weakest hubbing to strongest) Class I (rotated) Doubled Die Obverses.
Below are the results. The earlier die state examples I reckon are between EDS and EMDS and the later examples (shown in my second post) are LDS (though the 003 is could be closer LMDS) paired with EMDS.
These two DDOs are very similar. The biggest difference I identified was the degree of doubling shown on the date; followed by the BE and in LIBERTY; the N from IN; G from GOD; and the RS from TRUST.
Yes the die markers help, especially if you consider the gouges above the Ts remain until MDS on the 008, then disappear, whereas the 003 has a flood of additional markers from MDS through LDS. My suggestion is to examine the date, look for known markers and attribute accordingly.
