Offhand, I'd say you're right. Surface looks grainy and two's don't look quite right. I'd rather see it in hand before saying for sure...along with weighing it...but I surely wouldn't buy it based on pics.
From what is see that is a fake as you can get! It lacks all of the characteristics of a true 1922 plain.
From what I can remember, genuine examples exhibit the following: 1) a mushy "We"; 2) The "L" of liberty is right on the rim; 3 the first "2" in the date being stronger than the second. There is also a distinctive die crack on the reverse to look for.
I would be heartbroken on that one, but I bet that it is worth a few bucks even as a counterfeit. No matter what a great education piece and a very cool find - I never seem to find anything the old, fake or real.
To me it looks like a sand mold with the wrong year for Lincolns bust. The 2s are way off. This one kind of looks like the 1914D I have that is counterfeit same sand look on the OBV and REV. The 1914D would look right if it didn't have a sand mold look. Maybe just pitted.
I found it in one of my wheat rolls. So far I have found fake 1914D, 1922 no D, 1955 DDO,
1913S,1909S VDB, there might be a couple more, I would have to dig them up.

WOW! That's a nice fake collection! My only fake is a 09 SVDB, but I had to buy it. It's an added S coin, it's pretty nice but has an obvious fake placement of the MM.
