I agree with both Rog and Bill. If someone finds a coin they love and are excited to add it to their collection, there is no reason to bash the coin because it holds no premium or even if it did. The fact is I appreciate it when I find a coin and you guys/gals tell me the facts... if no one ever told me that MD was worthless I would have thought I had the most amazing collection... lol
There is a fine balance to everything.

Well I like this thread and Im one to not collect everything.I see alot of stuff that I or my friends would give away but I try not to be rude.I may make a comment here and there but I like to see people happy at what ever they collect. Also Im one to admit, mostly everything seems minor to me.I beat myself up the mostly ,so its harmless..

Wow, some nice comments and insight. And I do agree on educating others when the need arises or is asked for. But, as Chris pointed out, nobody is an expert on all the particulars of this hobby. And I can make some examples.Grab a handful of circulated 1960-D rpms and try to sell them, yet I don't see comments when somebody posts one to the effect of "Well it's only worth 50 cents". Or some minor doubled knees, trails, etc. Yet when I saw the die #4 reverse, there were plenty of comments on it's lack of value. So my point is: If you feel the need to point out value, be consistant, and don't do it just on the coins that aren't valuable to yourself because they may be valuable to others whether you agree or not.Anything else is just imposing your will on others. And a PS to Karah, if you have extreme MD coins, I for one, am interested. Don't toss them

Very cool post. One word can address every issue raised here, and that is 'respect. Respect the person, their coin, their passion. Have a little good natured fun if you want, but be aware that you could hurt someone's feelings if you say it wrong.

I think Bob just summarized it nicely...and Joe showed us how to handle those who don't understand Bob's summary. That's why they are two of the most respected members on LCR.

'' NOW I LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP. I PRAY THE LORD FOR A COIN TO KEEP '' probably could be the motto for LCR forum .

While I agree humor is a good thing,it doesn't need to be on every post and sometimes it doesn't belong at all. That's what chat rooms are for.Taking things off topic will sometimes ruin the intent.

As one of the newer members here I must say this is a great thread. I have to admit when I first joined and started reading the threads I was very leery to post anything that wasn't a "real" error. I do feel more comfortable now about posting but in the mean time my knowledge about errors has grown so much that I now can tell (most often) an MD from a DD. On another thread Bob mentioned that it isn't the number of coins searched but the quality of the search that counts when it come to finding DD's and errors. The only time I do a quick scan of a coin is when there isn't anything listed in the books or online for errors. But those that are listed all get scoped which is nearly every year and MM it seems. So I think I am doing something right, but finding a DD has still eluded me. However I have found some neat other types of errors such as some neat MD's, even a few low grade RPM's,cracks and other unique errors. I sort of like that oddball stuff, but am still looking for those elusive DD's, CAM's and WAM;s and so on and so forth. As for posting a find, that will come with time, when I think I have something worthy of posting. (soon I hope) So I guess I am still a little leery to post something that may be considered by some or many as a waste of their time.

Thanks Maineman for starting this thread. It has been quite informative and reassuring. Oh yeah to answer your question about the best variety or error for cents, my opinion - any of them!

I think the most extreme one I have found would be the 1970S If you would even call it extreme... http://www.lincolncentresource.net/f...ad.php?t=18465 I have seen better ones posted recently on the forum. PM me your address if you want this one, you can have it

I would like to add one more piece to the puzzle. No coin is a total DUD, even if it is something that is not a hugely valuable collectible. I would be the first to say that.

Each coin posted is, at the very least, a teaching tool. Education is at the core of numismatics. The more you know, the more you can find.

                        Have Fun,

You are so right Bill, sounds just like what I told somebody yesterday when he was disappointed in a die chip.

I would like to add something to this thread. I have seen and been guilty of using the wrong choice of words. I don't believe that people reply to threads with an intent to offend. As I said in another thread "Communication is Key". I will try my best to express what I am trying to say. I just ask that if someone does get offended from me or another member, to not "stab back", It creates a lot of hard feelings, hurt feelings, and doesn't help at all, just as the lack of using the correct words can hurt someone. Please ask what that person means first before assuming or ask yourself what you really think they meant, because I bet that 99% of the time it was just a poor choice of words and or lack of words. There are a lot of really great people here, so lets give them the benefit of the doubt. This applies to all aspects of life not just forums. I hope that I said this the right way because it's not meant to offend anyone, I never would want to do that. I hope others feel the same way.

                                Hi
I been around for nearly four years and still don't take the time to explain my thoughts or in some cases use the right words/terminology! Just yesterday I caused a uproar when I used the wrong words explaining feeder-finger errors/ doubled dies etc. I am making a commitment to either use the right terminology or ask or look for it!
