    1955-S Clashed Die End Roll

I just got this coin because it looked interesting that it was red on one side and brown on the other. I don't know if that's even a good thing. But after a closer look it appears that this coin is a Clashed Die.

I'm wondering what kind of value this coin has and how rare is this.

Nice looking coin. Just in case your not familiar with this clash, It's listed on pg. 376 of the CPG fourth edition. I chased this clash for I don't know how long trying to figure out what it was until I joined this site. After all that time and asking for help I came across the back pages of the the book and there it was... O-well !

Here's the overlay that I copied and saved for reference. Thanks to who ever supplied it. My overlays are usually in the Negative coloring, I like this one better. The mark behind Lincolns head is from the C of cent. I couldn't really tell if your coin had it or not but thought I saw something and the rest, well I'll let you take a look at the picture.

Edit: I just remembered who did the overlay pic. Thanks to Steven for his great work!

Most that I find are between 54' - 57' but have seen it on some of the 40's also.

Just thought I would share this die clash...nothing special but I'm keeping it. I almost didn't see it. This is a 1972. Oh! it's a Nine by the way.

That is unusual and I would think that it maybe a dropped design element instead of a die clash. If there is no further evidence of a die clash, this would strengthen the fact that it is a drop design element.

PS - if this is a dropped design element, it is much rarer than a die clash.

                      Thanks BJ,

I'm aware of dropped letters/numbers and look for them when I inspect my coins but I figured that a dropped letter would be in a different location or offset a bit. This nine or what you can see lines up like it should for a clash.

I checked my 1972 for additional clash marks and there is a portion of Lincolns coat by the nine but under the memorial building. So it turns out that it is a clashed die.

                          Thanks BJ,

                            fugnchill,
I have 3 of those very coins like you have pictured. I believe mine are 1972D. I am beginning now to rule out dropped letters because I would have figured they wouldn't last too many strikings, and still look the same. A dropped letter fragment would have been smashed by now.

Check out this post and see if the pics I posted and this one coin are the same...OK?

                              Hi Bob,

Mine is a 72-D also, I just didn't put the MM. I tend not to go into too much detail in my posts, otherwise I end up writing a book. I haven't checked your link yet but I'm sure their the same. If not then I'll make a quick note here.

                              Thanks,
