    Starting a wheat set

    Hi All,

This summer I decided that I would start the long task of putting together a set of all the wheat cents. I made a purchase of some nice starting coins from a fellow member to get me on my way. Here are a few of the highlights of my set so far. (The 1909 VDB was the first coin I ever bought at a coin store, about 2 years ago)

And lastly, worn but semi-key 1924D.

No, it just so happened that vf was the most common grade. Right now I am just going for whatever I can get my hands on. I don't care about the grade, as long as you can see the date fairly clearly.

Nice Simon. I stopped on my set when I got into varieties and errors. I will have to back some day and finish it off. Good luck and have fun!

Wow, nice set Simonm! I have been wanting to get a set going, but can't seem to get into it enough. I got a good start when a relative gave me two partially filled albums, sadly they were all minus the key/semi key/ better dates.... only had common ones....

You have a huge task in front of you. If I was starting over, I'd focus only on 1909-1934 in the highest grades I could afford. I add up to 1934 because there's some REALLY nice 1934 Lincolns out there for cheap. I would also only buy BN, RB and toners. The red coins are just too expensive and somewhat boring to me anymore. Plus you have to worry about them eventually turning.

You're young, I also recommend you take your time. Try to fill your holes with mint state coins. I read that you're fine if you can "read the date" but eventually, you'll get the itch to upgrade your circulated coins and really nice high grade coins will find their way to you over the years.
